FCA bosses Wheatley and Lawton to lead ESMA committees

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has appointed six senior regulatory figures to lead its regulatory standing committees, including FCA chief executive Martin Wheatley.

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has appointed six senior regulatory figures to lead its regulatory standing committees, including FCA chief executive Martin Wheatley. 

In an announcement today, ESMA said that Wheatley would become the chairman of the Investor Protection and Intermediaries Standing Committee.

Wheatley’s colleague, David Lawton, the current director of markets policy at the FCA, will chair the market data standing committee. All appointments will be taken up from 1 October 2015.

Lourdes Centeno, the vice chairperson of the Spanish regulator, the CNMV, will chair ESMA’s review panel and Elizabeth Roegele, chief executive of securities supervision at German regulator BaFin will chair the Secondary Markets Standing Committee.

Jean-Paul Servais, chairman of the Belgium regulator, FSMA who will oversee the Financial Innovation Standing Committee.

The committees are groups drawn from a mixture of regulators in the member states and ESMA staff.  All appointments are for two years.

The Central Bank of Ireland’s director of markets, Gareth Murphy, has had his tenure renewed as chairperson of the investment management standing committee.

Other renewals include Konstantinos Botopoulos of Greece’s HCMC who remains as chairperson of the Market Integrity Standing Committee and Gerard Rameix, of French regulator The AMF who remains as chairperson of the Corporate Finance Standing Committee.

Giuseppe Vegas, chairman of the Italian regulator CONSOB continues as the chairman of the Post Trading Standing Committee.
