Citadel Securities has hired Barclays former global head of electronic equities, Joe Mecane, to head up execution services, as it continues its impressive run of hiring the industry’s top electronic specialists.
He will be responsible for the market maker’s equity, options and exchange traded fund (ETF) businesses, which has expanded significantly over the past year.
Mecane served as Barclays global head of electronic equities since 2014. Prior to that, he was head of US equities and co-head of US cash and listings for the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
He will replace Jamil Nazarali, who was named as a special advisor to Citadel Securities’ CEO Peng Zhao last month.
“I am excited to have someone of Joe’s talent join our team and look forward to working closely with him as we expand our business across products and geographies,” said Zhao in a statement.
The move is the latest in a flurry of hirings at the broker-dealer, which according to the Financial Times, now trades roughly one in five shares bought or sold in the US.
In April it hired JP Morgan’s former European head of equities, Laurent Marquis, to take up a role in its equity derivatives unit.
It also named Stephen Luparello, former director of trading markets at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), as general counsel.
