Hong Kong volumes motor ahead as market cap hits record

In August, the total on and off floor turnover was HK$1503 billion, a 50% increase on June 2014.

At the end of August, market capitalisation in Hong Kong reached an all-time high of HK$26,126 billion.

In August, the total on and off floor turnover was HK$1503 billion, compared to HK$1415 billion in July and HK$1,020 billion in June.

That rise in volumes, 50% in two months, has been accompanied with a run-up in Hong Kong stocks of nearly 10%. At the end of June, the Hang Seng index stood at 23,190. The index’s closing level on 5 September was 25,240.

The average daily turnover for the first eight months of 2014 in the securities markets was HK $64,373 million, an increase of 0.2% compared to $64,258 million for the same period last year.

Turnover in exchange-traded funds during August 2014 was HK$135,464 million, a record high.

Average daily turnover of futures and options for the first eight months of 2014 was 529,371 contracts, a decrease of 3% on the same period of last year.
