SEC appoints JP Morgan’s market structure head as trading director

Brett Redfearn has left JP Morgan to head up the trading and markets division at the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The global head of market structure for the corporate and investment bank at JP Morgan has departed to join the SEC as director of trading and markets.

Brett Redfearn will head up the SEC’s trading and markets division, which oversees securities market participants and infrastructure including broker-dealers, exchange operators, alternative trading systems and transfer agents.

Redfearn began his career at the American Stock Exchange where he ran business strategy and equity order flow, and he has served on the boards of Bats Global Markets, the Chicago Stock Exchange and BIDS Trading.

He has extensive experience in US equity markets having worked closely with investors, exchanges and broker-dealers, with a focus on how technology, regulation and business trends change trading patterns.

Jay Clayton, chairman at the SEC, explained Redfearn’s experience and longstanding engagement with the industry make him “exceptionally well positioned to lead the division”.

He said: “Redfearn has been a thought leader on a wide range of issues facing our rapidly changing capital markets, and I know he will continuously ask the question, 'are our markets best serving the long-term interests of the investing public?’”
