Barclays Capital, the investment banking division of UK bank Barclays, has appointed Bill White as its new head of equities electronic trading.

White will be based in New York and report jointly to Joseph Corcoran, head of equities trading, and Richard Cunningham, head of equities distribution.

Working with other business heads from the equities division, White will be responsible for managing the firm's integrated strategy across electronic product development, the distribution of products to clients and liquidity aggregation and provision. He will use his experience of building and operating options trading platforms, structured products businesses and market making to reinforce the bank's electronic equities capabilities.

White was previously head of Barclays Capital designated market makers (DMM) business at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), a position that will now be held by Evan Solomon. Solomon, previously a director for Barclays Capital's DMM business, will report to White.

Meanwhile, Barclays Capital has named Sigurbjorn Thorkelsson as head of equities, EMEA, in addition to his current role as head of equities, Asia-Pacific.

Thorkelsson will take charge of the development of the bank's European equities platform in addition to expanding its equity operations in Asia-Pacific. He will report to Jerry Donini, global head of equities, and plans to relocate to London during 2011.

Prior to joining Barclays Capital in April 2010, Thorkelsson was head of equities, Asia-Pacific at both Lehman Brothers and Nomura. Since his appointment at Barclays Capital, Thorkelsson has overseen the launch of its full-service equities franchise in Japan and Hong Kong.
