Former New York Stock Exchange chief executive Duncan Niederauer has joined derivatives trading platform TeraExchange as an advisory director.

Niederauer retired from NYSE following its takeover by Intercontinental Exchange, leaving earlier than intended as the integration went through quicker than planned.

TeraExchange is a US-based swap execution facility and also became the first regulated platform for bitcoin derivatives and a spot bitcoin price index in September last year.

The platform also offers trading in interest rate swaps, credit default swaps and non-deliverable forwards.

"This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the growing Tera footprint. They are a young derivatives exchange with a great management team and a strong product and sales pipeline,” said Niederauer. “I have already begun advising them on how to approach and capture the opportunities that are emerging in the rapidly evolving global financial landscape for traditional and emerging financial products, such as bitcoin.”

In October 2014, Niederauer resurfaced as managing director of a start-up brokerage firm called Battery East.

Niederauer was recognised as an Honorary Commander of the British Empire by her majesty Queen Elizabeth II for his efforts to advance the peace process in Northern Ireland.
