Italian MEP Roberto Gualtieri has been appointed as chairman of the EU’s Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) Committee.
The role was previously held by Sharon Bowles, a member of the UK’s Liberal Democrat Party, who stepped down after two years in the job at the end of the 2014 Parliament.
Gualtieri, from Italy’s Partito Democratico, has been an MEP since 2009 and previously served as a substitute member of the ECON Committee between 2012 and 2014.
He will be supported by ECON Committee veterans Markus Ferber, who has served the Committee since 2009 and was the lead rapporteur for MiFID II during its legislative stage, and Peter Simon, who has also served ECON for the past five years, both of whom take the role of vice-chairs.
Two further posts are set to be confirmed in Strasbourg on 14 July.
The ECON Committee is responsible for analysing and advising Parliament on economic policy and financial regulation.
