April volumes fall in Australia

The Australian Securities Exchange has reported that in April 2014, the average daily number of trades in the cash market was 695,000, 14% lower than in April 2013.

The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) has reported that in April 2014, the average daily number of trades in the cash market was 695,000, representing a total 14% lower than the daily tally in April 2013.

In terms of value traded on the cash market last month, the figure of $3.2 billion was 8% lower than the A$3.48 billion during April 2013.

Looking at the ten months of the ASX financial year to date, which finishes at the end of June 2014, the volumes picture looks brighter, with average daily trades rising 11% to 726,000. The average daily value of on-market trading is up by 4% in the same period.

In the derivatives markets in April 2014, the average daily number of derivatives traded on ASX decreased 21% on the previous calendar period with both single stock and index options lower.

In April 2014, average daily futures and options on futures volume on the ASX 24 decreased 15% on April 2013.
