Bloomberg appoints new global head of rates electronic trading

London-based hire joins from the Bank of England; previously served at Nomura, Credit Suisse and Mizuho Capital Markets.

Arif Merali has joined Bloomberg as global head of rates electronic trading after more than five years at the Bank of England.

Merali will be based in London in his new role, where he will support the expansion of Bloomberg’s global electronic trading offering.

During his time at the Bank of England, he served as a senior advisor, where he provided technical advice and policy support to the bank’s executive director of markets, as well as the wider markets directorate.

Merali brings extensive industry experience to his new role, and previously served as head of BGP swaps trading at Nomura, a position he held for almost a year.

Prior to this, he also worked as Credit Suisse for more than 15 years, where he headed up the firm’s GBP rates trading.

Merali also gained early career experience at Mizuho Capital Markets as a JPY interest rates derivatives trader.

Bloomberg had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.

Merali’s appointment marks the most recent fixed income-related hire for Bloomberg, and follows news in March 2026 that Ed Wood had joined the firm as a credit sales specialist.

Wood had previously spent five years at investment manager Ninety One, where he served as a fixed income trader.
