HKEX is set to extend its derivatives after-hours trading session from 3am to 4.15am local time from March 2027.
Day session trading hours and holiday trading, will remain unchanged.
The change is “subject to regulatory approval and market readiness” according to the exchange group.
Move is set to bolster market accessibility for global investors and provide market participants greater flexibility to respond to market developments outside Hong Kong trading hours.
Vanessa Lau, chief operating officer, HKEX, said: “Global markets are increasingly interconnected, and investors need the flexibility to manage risk as developments unfold across time zones.
“[…] This initiative, together with our pilot project to enable digital payment solution for AHT, reflects HKEX’s continued commitment to enhancing market accessibility, connectivity and operational resilience.”
A further extension to 5.15am local time is also under consideration, and could come into effect in November 2027, dependent on market reaction to the initial extension.

Additionally, in order to support the extended session, certain adjustments are set to be made to some post-trade service windows and risk management procedures.
Elsewhere, HKEX has also confirmed that it is currently working with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority to explore how e-HKD can be used to advance margin deposit outside regular banking hours and provide further flexibility for market participants.
