HSBC promotes internally for new Americas head of Asia FX trading

Promotion marks an extension of an ongoing four-year tenure at the firm, spanning trader and director positions.

Tom Zhang has been promoted as head of Asia FX trading, Americas at HSBC.

New York-based Zhang steps into the role after initially joining the bank in 2022 as an EMFX Asia trader.

In his new position, Zhang assumes responsibility for leading Asia FX trading across Americas, spanning market making, risk management, liquidity provision and trading strategy across Asian, Middle Eastern and Eastern European currencies.

During his ongoing tenure at the firm, he has also served in a director position.

Prior to joining HSBC, Zhang spent seven years at Barclays, where he initially served in an analyst role, before moving into an FX trader position, and later as a vice president in EMFX Asia trading.

HSBC had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.

Zhang’s appointment follows further hires and moves for HSBC in recent months. In August 2026, Aakarsh Bansal joined the firm as an emerging markets credit trader, based in London.

He most recently spent five years at Deutsche Bank, where he held the same role.
