Japanese investment bank Nomura has appointed Samir Patel and Chris Valli as head of execution sales and head of US research sales respectively, as the bank seeks to grow its US operation.

Based in New York, the new appointments will oversee all distribution of equities products in the Americas. Patel is responsible for sales-trading of cash, convertibles, derivatives, futures, electronic trading and programs. Prior to joining Nomura, Patel worked as a co-head of derivative sales at Bank of America. He has also worked for Lehman Brothers.

Valli will focus on completing the building up Nomura's sales team in New York and other US regions, and will work closely with the research department and sales desks. Valli joined Nomura in 2008 from Lehman Brothers, where he was desk head for Asia excluding Japan from 2006 to 2008.

“Samir and Chris are strong player-coaches with deep client relationships, and I am confident they will make rapid progress in making Nomura an indispensable partner to our clients in the Americas,” commented Ciaran O'Kelly, senior managing director and head of equities, Americas.

Nomura has been building up its presence significantly in the US since 2009. The firm appointed two US cash equities heads earlier this month, opened a new equities trading floor in New York and initiated its US cash equities operation the same month. The firm also appointed a new head of international trading in the Americas in August 2010.
