Japan-based investment bank Nomura has hired Jon Block as its new head of international trading in the Americas, as part of a drive by the firm to build up its product capabilities in the US, Latin America and Canada.

Block, who previously traded international stocks for Goldman Sachs and led UBS's Canadian trading and sales trading franchise, will run Nomura's international trading business in the US from New York, as well as being a client facing trader and risk manager. He is due to start at Nomura in September.

Block will report to Ciaran O’Kelly, head of equities, Americas, and regionally to Dean Schulberg, head of EMEA cash equities and John Adair, co-head of Asia-Pacific equity sales.

The hire comes as part of Nomura's US expansion in fixed income, investment banking and equities. The firm says it is now focused on establishing its fundamental equity research, cash trading and sales trading, research sales and prime brokerage platforms in the US.

“Investor clients now expect access to global themes and flows,” said O'Kelly. “As we complete our US build, Jon elevates our ability to harness the power and depth of Nomura's international resources and deliver them to clients.”
