The Hong Kong Stock Exchange was closed on Wednesday because a category 8 typhoon hit the country.

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, the exchange operator, initially cancelled the pre-opening session of the securities market and said that the morning session would be delayed because of the typhoon warning, but later announcements revealed that trading had been cancelled for the whole day.

Category 8 typhoons have wind speeds of 63 kilometres an hour or more.
