ASX monthly volumes fall in May

The total number of trades at the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) fell by 28% in May 2014 compared to the previous month. The average number of daily trades fell from 863,000 to 653,000.

The total number of stock trades at the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) fell by 28% in May 2014 compared to the previous month. The average number of daily trades fell from 863,000 to 653,000.

In ASX’s financial year to date, volumes are still higher than the previous period, with a 7% increase year-on-year.

Trades through Center Point, ASX’s mid-point matching system,  rose in May from A$4.289 billion in April to A$ 6.1 billion in May.

The total value of cash trading in May was A$ 81.5 billion, a 26% fall on April’s total value of A$110 billion.

The average daily number of derivatives traded on ASX during the month decreased 26% from April with both single stock and index options lower.
