Merrill Lynch has appointed Thomas Montag as its new head of global sales and trading. Montag will be responsible for all of the firm’s global sales and trading activities across debt and equities, and will report directly to John Thain, chairman and CEO of Merrill Lynch.

“Tom is one of the most highly skilled and knowledgeable people in the securities industry. With over 20 years of experience in the United States and internationally Tom will help drive the firm’s strategy in key markets around the world,” Thain said in a statement.

Montag’s most recent position was with Goldman Sachs, where he was co-head of the global securities business. During his 22-year stint at the firm, he was also co-president of Japanese operations and head of the global derivatives business. He was a member of the company’s management committee by the time he left in December 2007.
